A PLANE crash in a snowy wilderness, mountain lions and a plunge into icy water were all part of the day job for film star Kate Winslet as she filmed her new movie The Mountain Between Us.
It’s a love story in the most unlikely of settings as two strangers, Kate’s journalist and a surgeon played by Luther star Idris Elba, are stranded on a mountain after a plane crash.
“Nobody knows where we are,” is her chilling line, which was revealed in the movie trailer released earlier this year. With both characters injured, their battle for survival begins and as they find inner strengths they didn’t know they possessed, romance blossoms.
The Academy Award-winning actress, who lives in West Sussex, revealed she filmed some extreme scenes in the movie – but was stopped from getting within reach of a mountain lion.
Kate has said she was up for a scene with the lion inside the fuselage. “But the studio was like, ‘No, it’s not going to happen!’” she told the Daily Mail. Kate also revealed her husband wasn’t too keen on the idea either. “He thought it was a joke,” she said. “I said, ‘It’s not a joke.’ He did not want those lions close to me at all.”
She did film a scene where she plunged into icy water – without using a stunt double. She told the studio: “This is what I do. I’m the water girl!”
The 41-year-old actress, who made her small screen debut at the age of 12 in a TV ad for Sugar Puffs, has lived in West Sussex since 2012 after relocating from New York.
Kate’s acting talents won her awards and plaudits for her role in the 1992 movie Heavenly Creatures but it was her performance as Rose in James Cameron’s 1997 classic Titanic opposite Leonardo diCaprio that launched her as an international star. It remains the highest grossing film of all time and won Kate a European Film Award. Since then, she has won the Best Actress Oscar for The Reader in 2008 as well as a series of Grammy Awards.
She will be back on the big screen in December, when she stars in Wonder Wheel, a Woody Allen drama also starring Justin Timberlake, Juno Temple and Jim Belushi.
The hit BBC series Luther, which made a star of Idris Elba, 44, is due to start filming next year.
The Mountain Between Us is based on Charles Martin’s 2010 bestselling novel and is directed by Hany Abu-Assad, who was nominated for Oscars for his films Paradise Now in 2006 and Omar in 2013, from a script by Chris Weitz and J. Mills Goodloe. It also stars Beau Bridges and Dermot Mulroney.
The Mountain Between Us, starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba, opens in cinemas on October 6.
