The Nutcracker is broadcast live from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, featuring music by Tchaikovsky. It’s a magical adventure on Christmas Eve for Clara and her Nutcracker doll. Their journey to the Land of Sweets brings with it some of the most familiar of all ballet moments, such as the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Waltz of the Flowers. Peter Wright’s production for The Royal Ballet keeps true to the spirit of this Russian ballet classic, with period details and dancing snowflakes.

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, Princess Aurora lives in a castle where fairies bestow her with gifts of beauty, temperament, purity, joy and generosity. The wicked Fairy Carabosse places a curse on Aurora – to prick her finger on a spinning wheel on her 16th birthday…and die! The beautiful and kind Lilac Fairy casts a spell to counter the curse so that instead of dying Aurora falls asleep for a hundred years. Only the touch of true love’s kiss can awaken her and undo the evil spell…

Berliner Philharmoniker: New Year’s Eve Concert (12A)

There are also four famous works by Maurice Ravel, which create an impressive synthesis of elegance and originality. The final highlight is the Boléro, perhaps the most stunning crescendo in music history.

Through Marley’s words, we learn how three magical spirits opened Scrooge’s eyes and made him realise the true value of love and forgiveness. This award-winning stage adaptation is told from the perspective of Scrooge’s deceased business partner.
