The first of a double bill of films celebrating 250 years of circus, this documentary tells the shocking story behind Nepal’s first circus. Sheetal and Saraswoti met as teenagers in a Kathmandu refuge, survivors of child trafficking to corrupt Indian circuses and  brought back across the border to a Nepal they could barely remember. The film, in Nepali with English subtitles, follows them as they confront the families that sold them, seek acceptance and build a future utilising their secret weapon: their breathtaking skills as circus artists.

La Strada (PG)

The second of a double bill of films celebrating 250 years of circus, La Strada stars its director Federico Fellini’s wife Giuletta Masina as the waif-like Gelsomina, who is sold by her mother into a life of drudgery to a brutish fairground wrestler called Zampano. Then, when she begins a relationship withe gentle-natured tightrope walker The Fool, a dramatic turn of events leads to a powerful conclusion. The film is in Italian with English subtitles.

Gandini, 8 Songs Workshop: Basic Juggling Technique

Two jugglers from the circus company Gandini lead this entry level workshop, an all-round beginner’s guide to juggling. Gandini will also be showcasing their juggling skills in 8 Songs, a series of vignettes set against a soundtrack of classic rock ’n’ roll anthems. In a collaboration between UK companies NoFit State Circus and Motionhouse, Block is a powerful fusion of dance and circus that pushes the limits of both art forms. Block is about life in the city: its contradictions and challenges. Twenty oversized blocks are deconstructed and reformed to create different cityscapes for the performers to play on, move with and explore.
