Experimental Landscape Drawing

Making Beautiful Glass Beads

Teacher Sarah Downton, a member of Glass Bedmakers UK and the International Society of Glass Beadmakers, teaches students how to make glass beads in the flame using a gas torch, coloured glass rods and a series of decorative techniques. Students will practice increasingly complex designs and shaping to create a final piece of jewellery or a suite of beads.

Reshaping Cloth – Print and Manipulation

Printed textile expert Caroline Bartlett teaches this summer school, where students will investigate formal and more organic possibilities of manipulating the surface into relief and 3D structures. Students will draw on aspects of shibori, origami and smocking as well as contemporary approaches to materials, they will crumple, crush, fold, pleat and colour.

Short Story Writing

Stained Glass inspired by West Dean

Students can immerse themselves in stained glass under the guidance of tutor Carole Gray,, a member of the Contemporary Glass Society and the British Society of Master Glass Painters. She will teach traditional techniques to make stain glass and explore the use of decorative sandblasting. Inspiration can be found in the gardens and buildings of West Dean.

Fabric Print with Amanda Duke

Enjoy instant success when you design and print your foam core blocks on this one or two-day course. Create funky geometric, organic and rhythmical repeat and random patterns from just a couple of blocks using an array of colour. Make a range of 50cm square samples on paper and fabric.

French Polishing & Modern Hand Finishes

Painting in the Garden Masterclass

The garden at Charleston, the home of the artist Vanessa Bell ,which became a meeting place for the artistic Bloomsbury Group, was designed by artist and critics Roger Fry and it was planted to be painted. Sussex-based artist Julian Le Bas gives a day’s intensive painting tuition when students can lose themselves in the atmosphere of the Walled Garden and surrounding grounds. Looking at approaches to composition, there’s a particular emphasis on colour. The class is suitable for improvers and students should bring their own paints. Easels, boards and brushes are provided.
