Stone Carving – Fantastic Fish and Shiny Shells

Sculptor, stone-carver, maker and teacher Paula Haughney shows students how to take inspiration from under the sea to carve fish and molluscs in the coral reef colours of limestones, soapstones and alabasters. They can create a marine sculpture through direct carving.

The Surface Within – Contemporary Hand Felting Techniques

Liz Clay, a practitioner and researcher of hand-made felt, takes students through a range of contemporary hand-felting techniques to produce dynamic effects within the surface of fabric. Layers, pattern and resists are combined with nuno felt, stencils, laminating and cutwork, and students will create distinctive patters and designs for use in interior projects or decorative elements in garment construction.

Unfolding Landscapes – Cloth, Paper and Stitch

Students at this summer school can take inspiration from material and place, explore the use of layers in found textiles and papers to create folding forms and objects inspired by the land and landscape. Tutor Cas Holmes, who studied Japanese art, textiles and papermaking in Japan, guides students through techniques such as print, dye, collage and stitch.

Ways with Clay – Experimental Animal Sculpting

Students experiment with different hand-building pottery techniques to make a series of animal sculptures. Methods include pinch, slab and dowel, and students will make both free-standing pieces and relief panels, on the last day learning how to Raku fire their work. The course is taught by Susan Halls, who teaches and makes sculpture in the USA.

Wood Engraving

Wood engraver Chris Daunt leads this summer school, which gives student the chance to experience the art of wood engraving, a relief printmaking method using engraving tools on endgrain blocks of lemonwood. Students learn how to prepare and transfer a drawing onto a block, then engrave and print the block using an Albion press, as well as hand-burnished prints.

Shibori Tie Dye with Amanda Duke

Sussex Prairie Garden, Morlands Farm, Wheatsheaf Road, near Henfield

Wednesday August 8 and Monday August 13, 9.45am-2pm

£55 per day

Use a variety of resist techniques and an indigo dye vat to make exciting surface patterns on cotton fabric. Make a fabric stash suitable for further textile experiments, stitching, quilting, cushion covers, bags and other craft items. On the second day, continue to make Shibori samples or add colour to existing experiments using fabric paints or a combination of both. Options to dye upcycled T shirts, other white cotton items, scarf blanks or make a supply of fat quarters for quilting or other projects.

Eco Print with Amanda Duke

This is a one or two-day course exploring eco-print dyeing, a fascinating way of printing onto fabric. Participants will use flowers and leaves from the Prairie Garden in a contact printing method that allows them to transfer their colour, texture and patterns. This course is an exploration into the surprising and exciting effects that can be achieved by wrapping plants in cloth.

Abstract Painting – Finding Your Voice

Robert Sosner, who has taught artists in the film and broadcast media industries, gives students an insight into the various forms of picture construction and expressive possibilities in abstract art and encourages them to find their own voice. Ceramic Surfaces – Exploring Connections with Drawing and Printing

Tutor Joanna Veevers, a member of Contemporary Applied Arts, guides students through an exploration of drawing and mark-making on a variety of papers and then to develop them using coloured slips with clay. Students will investigate low-tech printing techniques and experiment with making incised, engraved and painted marks and images into plaster that are then transferred to a ceramic body.

Create Your Own Jewellery

Jeweller Sarah Macrae shows students how to develop ideas for jewellery making whilst gaining making skills and learning new techniques. The summer schools starts with a short structured project and then fabricating, decorating and joining will be demonstrated.
